Defamation

I have been handling defamation suits since 1993.

Defamation is the publication of a false statement that tends to injure the reputation of the Plaintiff.  Over the years, I have been involved in suits with many major media outlets.  It was once said, “Never pick a fight with anyone who buys ink by the barrel.”  This is sage advice as suits against the media are extremely difficult.   The 1st Amendment provides protections for all citizens, but there are additional statutory and common law privileges and standards that the media receives, that are not afforded ordinary citizens.

Most of my cases have involved private figures.  I have obtained 6 and 7 figure jury verdicts against private citizens.  These cases were defamation per se cases.  Defamation per se involves false statements that are considered so damaging that they are deemed defamatory on their face.  These include accusations of moral turpitude or criminality in your profession.
